Hollywood Reads Sci-Fi at Vroman’s

The future of science fiction is being written by sophomores — and tomorrow, a Star Trek captain reads it out loud
Published on May 16, 2026

Saturday afternoon, the Light Bringer Project hauls its annual Omega Sci-Fi Project awards into Vroman’s upstairs event space, and the lineup of celebrity readers is, frankly, a casting director’s daydream. Isabella Gomez (Shrinking, The Goldbergs), Tawny Newsome (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Space Force), Monnae Michaell (Law and Order), Peter James Smith (The West Wing, The Dropout), and Stephanie Czajkowski (Star Trek: Picard, Doom Patrol) will read original short stories submitted by high schoolers from across greater Los Angeles.

The hardware is real: the Tomorrow Prize for overall excellence, and the Green Feather Award for stories that imagine our way out of environmental trouble. First place gets published in LA Parent Magazine — a clip with a byline before the kid has a driver’s license. Free parking, doors open to everyone, and the room holds the rare combination of teenagers, their proud parents, and people who have boarded a starship on camera.

Bring a kid, bring a friend, bring your dog-eared Le Guin — and arrive early before the good seats go.
