Pasadena City College’s Division of Institutional Equity, Diversity and Justice invites the public to join Cutcha Risling Baldy, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Native American Studies at Cal Poly Humboldt, for a morning of reflection and dialogue. An enrolled member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe with Hupa, Karuk and Yurok heritage, Risling Baldy will center her talk on Indigenous perspectives of cultural identity, environmental justice and sovereignty.

Her acclaimed book, “We Are Dancing for You,” recipient of the 2019 NAISA Best First Book Award, examines the revitalization of the Flower Dance—an annual coming-of-age ceremony for Hupa women that now takes place up to four times each year in the Hoopa Valley. Amid ongoing efforts to elevate Indigenous experiences, her presentation underscores the importance of lived knowledge and community resilience.

Los Angeles County, home to the nation’s largest concentration of Indigenous peoples, provides a fitting backdrop for this event, bridging local engagement with broader conversations about decolonization and Indigenous feminisms. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase and have their copies of “We Are Dancing for You” signed by the author.

Celebrating Indigenous People’s Day: A Breakfast & Book Signing with Cutcha Risling Baldy will run on Monday, Oct. 13 at 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Creveling Lounge, 1570 E. Colorado Blvd., in Pasadena.
