On March 1, 2023, The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens will celebrate its founders Henry and Arabella Huntington with a special event called “Stories We Tell.” The event, sponsored by The Huntington and The Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West, will showcase how The Huntington’s collections can inspire diverse and creative stories that reflect the history and culture of California and the West

Founders’ Day is a day of celebration and reflection for The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens.

The event will showcase a mix of serious and quirky stories inspired by various items from The Huntington’s collections. Speakers, including Sean Lahmeyer, Plant Collections and Conservation Manager; Silas Munro, Partner, Polymode & Faculty Co-Chair, MFA in Graphic design at Vermont College of Fine Arts; Karla Nielsen, Curator of Literary Collections; Pilar Tompkins Rivas, Chief Curator and Deputy Director of Curatorial and Collections, Lucas Museum of Narrative Art; and Li Wei Yang, Curator of Pacific Rim Collections, will share stories inspired by Eve Babitz’s archive, The Huntington’s Montezuma cypress, portraits by Laura Aguilar, the Horatio Nelson Rust collection, and glass plate photographs of 1890s and 1900s Chinatown. The event will be moderated by William Deverell, director of The Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West, and will feature an introduction by Huntington President Karen R. Lawrence.

These stories will showcase the breadth of The Huntington’s collections and the rich history of the institution’s location in the San Gabriel Valley. Attendees can expect to be inspired, educated, and entertained by these tales of California’s past and present.

The event is free with a reservation, and interested parties can register at the link provided. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear fascinating stories and learn more about The Huntington’s unique collections.
