Directed by Rob Reiner, who would go on to direct “Stand by Me” (1986) and “The Princess Bride” (1987), “The Sure Thing” stars John Cusack as Walter “Gib” Gibson and Daphne Zuniga as Alison Bradbury. The film chronicles a cross-country Christmas road trip in which two college students initially clash but gradually fall in love.
The film earned an 83% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 79% from audiences. Ebert noted the film’s portrayal of romance: “The love story is one of Hollywood’s missing genres.” He observed that when the characters finally kiss, “it means something. It means more, in fact, than any movie kiss in a long time, because it takes place between two people we’ve gotten to know and who have gotten to know each other.”
Variety described it as “a sweetly old-fashioned look at the last lap of the coming-of-age ordeal in which the sure thing becomes less important than finding the right person.”
The film is rated PG-13 and runs one hour 34 minutes.
