On Friday morning, the Altadena Library District will host “Music & Movement,” a program inviting children ages 0 to 5 to explore rhythm and sound. But behind the invitation to sing and dance lies a dual mission: fostering early literacy skills and reinforcing the library’s role as a cornerstone of community recovery.
The event encourages caregivers and children to engage in “songs, dancing, and free exploration of musical instruments.” The District cites research indicating that promoting early literacy can increase parent-child reading activity by one day per week and boost language scores by four to nine points. “Early literacy activities help your child develop skills that they will use to become successful readers,” the library notes.
The program comes at a time of renewal for the special District, which is politically independent of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The Altadena Library Foundation recently secured a $50,000 grant for renovations at the Bob Lucas Memorial Branch, while Loma Alta Park reopened in May after $2.4 million in renovations. District Director Nikki Winslow underscores the library’s stability following recent fires.
The official calendar lists a 10:30 a.m. start.
Music & Movement will run on Friday, Dec. 5 at 10:30 a.m. Main Library Community Room, 600 E. Mariposa St., Altadena, Calif. For more information, call (626) 798-0833 or visit https://www.altadenalibrary.org/programs?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D190768139.
