Innovate Pasadena Ask Me Anything Unpacks Non-Fungible Tokens and Sports: How and Why?

STAFF REPORT
Published on Aug 2, 2021

Aaron Hawkey, co-founder of BallerTV, will talk about his thoughts and answer your questions about NFTs (non-fungible tokens) in the sports world, after BallerTV announced last month that they are utilizing NFTs as a method for student athletes to financially benefit from their name, image and likeness (NIL).

Hawkey will be at Innovate Pasadena’s Ask Me Anything! (AMA) virtual event on Wednesday, August 4, 12 to 12:30 p.m.

BallerTV, founded in 2016 and based in Pasadena, is a streaming service that provides access to youth sports games with live streams, replays and highlights of top sporting events. Since its foundation, BallerTV has reached unprecedented scale, providing full live coverage of more than 10,000 games on any given weekend. BallerTV currently covers men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball and football that can be watched live or any time on a mobile-friendly website.

Last month, BallerTV said they will be releasing an innovative way for high school athletes to benefit from and monetize their likeness by reserving the proceeds of sales from exclusive NFTs of their highlights at the 2021 Pangos All-American Camp.

After five states passed legislation to allow college athletes to benefit from their name, image and likeness (NIL) effective July 1, BallerTV challenged the antiquated rules against high school athletes reaping the rewards of their NILs.

BallerTV’s groundbreaking effort to reserve funds from the sale of custom NFTs of the nation’s top 30 high school athletes who participated in the Pangos All-American Camp is the first of its kind, with profits to be given to players upon graduation. Players also have the option of directing the proceeds to a charity, school or community organization of their choosing. Both options are made to ensure that players do not jeopardize their athletic eligibility in their respective home states.

The first NFT drop was featured as a sports cover story in the New York Times.

In this virtual event, Hawkey will discuss their NFT program and answer your questions about NFTs in the sports world.

You may submit your questions when you register or ask during the event. All questions submitted by Monday, August 2nd at noon will be shared with Hawkey prior to the event.
