It’s a Sci-Fi Saturday

Published on May 20, 2023

Today, Hollywood stars will be lending their voices to the original work of Los Angeles County high school students in a unique science fiction event hosted at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena. The event, called “The Future Stars of Sci-fi: Celebrity Recitals and Recognitions of The Tomorrow Prize and The Green Feather Award,” is set to run from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

“The Mandalorian” actress Leilani Shiu and “The Originals” and “NCIS: Hawai’i” star Yasmine Al-Bustami are among the celebrities confirmed to be in attendance. They will be joined by Jasika Nicole (“Fringe,” “The Good Doctor”), Phil Anthony Rodriguez (“Star Wars: Rebels,” “Grimm”), Rico E. Anderson (“The Orville,” “Star Trek”), and Amy Tolsky (“Trust”).

The event is free to attend with registration through Eventbrite. The program will feature dramatic readings of seven short stories, five of which are finalists for The Tomorrow Prize. The stories include “What Lies Beyond” by Rafael Chavez, “Burn the World, Build with the Ashes” by Barrie Komsky, “Nights in the City” by Miguel Lujan, “The Blanket” by Evin Manlapaz, and “Obsolete” by Jasmine Sov.

Additionally, two eco-themed short sci-fi stories by the winners of The Green Feather Award will be read. This award, co-sponsored by the Nature Nexus Institute, features “Painting the Way Through the Future” by Diana Pena, and “Connections with Sage the Fungi” by Haifa Maung and Fia Layne.

The event will also honor those who received honorable mentions for The Tomorrow Prize and The Green Feather Award, including Isaac Graham and Trotsky Cartagena.

The Omega Sci-Fi Awards, founded by Sci-Fest L.A. in 2014, oversee both The Tomorrow Prize and The Green Feather Award. Currently, these awards are part of the nonprofit Light Bringer Project of Pasadena, with The Roddenberry Foundation serving as the main sponsor.
