Ichinosuke Umekawa will present traditional dances and his own choreography during the 6 p.m. event. The performance will include explanations of dance techniques and gestures.
The artist combines multiple disciplines in his approach to classical dance. Umekawa’s dance training began with ballet and continued with more than a decade of kabuki stage experience. He developed his skills under Living National Treasure Tamasaburō Bandō.
According to the Japan Foundation Los Angeles, Umekawa brings “a highly refined and modern approach to classical dance that preserves Japanese tradition” while also incorporating contemporary expression and a global perspective.
The evening program is scheduled to run 90 minutes at the garden tea house. It will conclude with a question-and-answer session where audiences can learn more about the art form.
Light refreshments and merchandise will be available for purchase during the event.
Tickets cost $20 per person. Children 10 and under attend free. Limited seating requires advance registration to guarantee admission.
