Set in Emperor Joseph II’s Vienna, the play charts the rivalry between court composer Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the “vulgar prodigy” whose outrageous behavior clashes with the sublimity of his music.
Official season copy describes the production as “lavishly laced with biting wit” and promises a work that “dives deep into ambition, envy, and the price of greatness,” inviting audiences to “embrace the intrigue of ‘Amadeus,’ where the music is divine and the drama is unforgettable.”
Mays anchors a company that includes Sam Clemmett as Mozart and Tony nominee Lauren Worsham as Constanze, with a large ensemble filling out Shaffer’s world of courtiers, clergy and conspirators.
The Playhouse’s 2025–26 season announcement and subsequent coverage position this “Amadeus” as a high-profile, fully staged production designed to attract wide audiences while prompting reflection on how societies recognize and reward artistic genius.
“Amadeus” will run on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 8 p.m. at Pasadena Playhouse, 39 S. El Molino Ave., Pasadena. For more call (626) 356-7529 or visit https://www.pasadenaplayhouse.org/event/amadeus/. Tickets: $48 – $142
