Kacey Musgraves will be headlining the first Palomino Festival at Brookside Park near the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in July, music promoter Goldenvoice announced.
The six-time Grammy winner will be joined by fellow Texan and outlaw country legend Willie Nelson and The Family in this one-day festival on July 9.
The Palomino Festival is expected to be Southern California’s largest festival celebrating Americana, alt-country and roots music, with up to 20 musicians and bands now on the schedule. Tickets go on sale at noon on Friday, April 1.
Goldenvoice talent buyer Stacy Vee told Billboard magazine the show is an homage to a musical tradition deeply rooted in the American experience – a mix of country and western themes influenced by indie rock, punk and alternative sound. The name Palomino also pays tribute to the former Palomino Club that opened in North Hollywood in 1949 and was the best-known country music club in Los Angeles for decades. The Palomino Club closed in 1995.
“I’ve always wanted to do this type of festival, focused on music that lives on the edge lives of what is and isn’t country,” Vee told Billboard. “It’s very important to me that these artists that I cultivated amazing relationships with get their own look and moment.”
Aside from Musgraves and Wilson and The Family, more than a dozen of the genre’s most celebrated acts are on the list of performers for the Palomino Festival: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, whose sound draws heavily from Isbell’s home state, Alabama, and the influence of Athens, Georgia; the recently reunited Turnpike Troubadours, Nashville string band Old Crow Medicine Show, masked cowboy crooner Orville Peck, Memphis-based Grammy-nominated folk, blues, gospel, soul, country, Appalachian and bluegrass artist Valerie June; guitarist and songwriter Charley Crockett, and country and western artist Nikki Lane, whose new album Highway Queen just came out.
Lane will have her Stage Stop Marketplace pop-up boutique at the Palomino Festival as well, Vee said.
“I can’t seem to do anything without Nikki Lane these days and she’ll be out there performing on stage and curating a vintage market,” Vee told Billboard.
The Compton Cowboys horseback riding club, with their solo Cowgirl Keiara Wade, will also be on board, plus specially created culinary items for fans, and artwork celebrating Americana and alt-country’s rich culture.
