Kate Baer in Conversation with Elizabeth Holmes discusses “And Yet: Poems”

Published on Dec 14, 2022

Kate Baer, New York Times bestselling author of “What Kind Of Woman” and “I Hope This Finds You Well,” will be at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena on Thursday, Dec. 15, to discuss her new book, “And Yet: Poems,” another bestseller.

She will be in conversation with Elizabeth Holmes, a San Francisco-based writer and journalist who’s known for her coverage of British royal style and fashion messaging. Holmes’ bestselling debut book, “HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style,” was published in November 2020.

Baer’s first book, which dealt with the pleasures and burdens of motherhood, was a bestseller during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. She started writing in 2019, doing much of the work inside a cafe in the Philadelphia suburbs because she couldn’t work at home – that’s where the children were.

That first book reached bookshelves deep into the pandemic, when gender inequality was being seen worldwide, when mothers had to make childcare arrangements so they could work. The book immediately resonated among fellow mothers, and women in general.

“I think what happened is this book acted a little bit like a friend angry on your behalf,” she told the Guardian in an interview. “During the pandemic – I don’t know what the statistics are off the top of my head – but how many women lost their jobs, lost income, lost quality of life, because they were the ones that had to stay at home with the kids?”

Her second book was based on texts including social media hate mail. She rearranged the words to create new poems and new meanings.

“And Yet: Poems” is Baer’s second full-length book of traditional poetry and dives deeper into the themes that are the hallmarks of her writing: motherhood, friendship, love, and loss. Taken together, these poems demonstrate the remarkable evolution of a writer and an artist working at the height of her craft, pushing herself and her poetry in a beautiful and impressive way.

Thursday’s event at Vroman’s is a ticketed event. Tickets include one entry and one copy of “And Yet: Poems.”
