Keeping Your Family Car in Top Shape During Pasadena’s Fall Weather

As September gives way to cooler temperatures in Pasadena, the changing weather brings unique challenges for vehicle maintenance. Mike Kefalas, head technician at JK Volvo in Pasadena, shares his expertise on how to keep your family car running smoothly through this seasonal transition.

“Fall in Southern California can be deceptive,” Kefalas explains. “We still get warm days, but the temperature fluctuations and occasional morning moisture can affect your vehicle in ways many drivers don’t anticipate.”

According to Kefalas, one of the most important systems to check as we head into autumn is your vehicle’s battery and electrical system. “Summer heat takes a tremendous toll on batteries, and we often see them fail during the first temperature drops of the season,” he notes. “That’s why September and October are our busiest months for battery replacements.”

The veteran mechanic recommends having your battery tested now, even if it seems to be working fine. “Modern testing equipment can predict battery failure before it leaves you stranded,” Kefalas says. “Most people don’t realize a battery can lose up to 35% of its efficiency during hot summer months, making it vulnerable just as fall begins.”

Kefalas also emphasizes the importance of checking your tire pressure as temperatures begin to change. “For every 10-degree drop in temperature, tires lose about one pound of pressure,” he explains. “Underinflated tires reduce fuel efficiency and can compromise safety, especially if we get any early rain.”

Speaking of rain, Kefalas stresses the importance of functioning wiper blades. “After a long, dry summer, wiper blades often deteriorate from heat and lack of use. Replace them now before the first rainfall, when you’ll really need them.”

The cooling system is another area requiring attention. “Many people think coolant is only about preventing overheating,” Kefalas says. “But it also prevents corrosion inside your engine and provides proper winter protection. The ideal time to flush your cooling system is during this transition period before temperatures drop further.”

For drivers who experienced air conditioning problems during summer, Kefalas advises addressing these issues now rather than waiting until next year. “Fall is actually the perfect time for AC service,” he notes. “Repair shops are less busy with cooling system emergencies, and you’ll often get better rates on service.”

Kefalas also reminds drivers to check their lights as days grow shorter. “With daylight hours decreasing, functioning headlights, brake lights, and turn signals become increasingly important. This is especially true during twilight hours when visibility is most compromised.”

A comprehensive fall vehicle inspection should include:

  • Battery and electrical system check
  • Tire pressure and condition assessment
  • Wiper blade replacement
  • Coolant level and condition verification
  • Light function testing
  • Brake inspection
  • Checking all fluid levels

“These simple preventative measures can save you thousands in repairs and prevent the inconvenience of breakdowns,” Kefalas emphasizes. “At JK Volvo, we offer a complete fall vehicle inspection that addresses all these critical systems.”
