The nonprofit museum’s “Celebrating Pride” event runs Saturday and Sunday, June 13–14, during regular hours. Visitors pick up museum-provided art supplies, decorate a flag representing their family, and add it to a growing installation in the outdoor courtyard — a communal display that changes throughout the weekend as new families contribute.
“Everyone is invited to represent their unique family by decorating a family flag,” the museum said on its event page. The completed flags hang side by side in the Rainbow Gallery, which the museum described as “a colorful community creation that represents the vibrancy of our diversity and the inclusivity for LGBTQ+ families and their allies.”
The format is a departure from at least one prior year’s Pride event at Kidspace, which invited families to add handprints to a giant chalk rainbow. This year’s flag project gives each family a distinct piece within a larger collective work.
“Diversity makes our community vibrant, and we welcome all types of families to play and learn at Kidspace!” the museum said on its website.
The activity is included with regular museum admission. Kidspace, located in Brookside Park next to the Rose Bowl, sits on 3.5 acres of indoor and outdoor exhibit space and serves children ages 1 to 10.
The Kidspace event offers a daytime option on a day when Pasadena’s Pride programming extends into the evening. The City of Pasadena hosts its fifth annual “Love, Loud & Proud” Pride celebration at City Hall from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, a free event featuring live performances, dance contests, inflatables, and arts and crafts, according to the city’s event listing.
Together, the two events give Pasadena families a full day of Pride Month programming — hands-on art at Kidspace in the morning and afternoon, and the citywide celebration at City Hall after dark.
The museum does not accept cash for admission. Discounts are available for seniors, EBT cardholders, and military families, according to the museum’s admission page.
