Indie rock musician Lillie West and friends will spin records Saturday at a Pasadena record store, one day after releasing her Sub Pop Records debut album under her project name Lala Lala.

The free DJ set at Healing Force of the Universe on East Walnut Street marks the first listed public event following the February 27 release of Heaven 2, West’s 10-track album on the Seattle label.

West’s official North American tour does not begin until March 6 in San Diego, according to Sub Pop Records, making the Pasadena date an informal gathering separate from the ticketed run.

West has ties to Los Angeles County that predate her music career. Born in California and raised in London until she was 12, she returned to the area and attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts before studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She now lives in Los Angeles.

Her new album includes “Arrow,” a track that samples French band La Femme’s song “Pasadena,” according to a review by Iowa Public Radio.

Heaven 2 was co-produced by West and Melina Duterte, the musician known as Jay Som. The two performed almost all of the album’s instruments, with guests including Sen Morimoto, Macie Stewart, and Porches’ Aaron Maine, according to a Sub Pop Records press release. The album follows three previous Lala Lala records — the self-released Sleepyhead in 2016, The Lamb in 2018, and I Want the Door to Open in 2021 — the latter two on Hardly Art, a Sub Pop imprint.

“I was definitely feeling very doomed and defeated when I wrote it,” West said of the title track, according to the Sub Pop artist page.

The event is listed on the DICE ticketing platform as “Lala Lala and friends DJ Set.” The identities of the friends joining West have not been announced. The DICE listing describes the event as free but does not specify whether an RSVP is required; readers may want to check the venue’s website or call ahead for details.

Healing Force of the Universe operates as both a vinyl record and bookstore and a live event space. The Pasadena venue has hosted acts including Jeff Parker, Reggie Watts, and Mike Watt, according to DoLA. Owner Austin Manuel told Pasadena Weekly in 2024, “I didn’t intend (for the store) to be a venue, but I think there’s a hole in our community.”

West’s North American tour will bring her back to Los Angeles on March 21 at Lodge Room, according to Sub Pop Records.
