Learn About Volunteering, Savor Delicious Coffee

Published on Sep 7, 2022

The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation, whose mission is to collect, preserve and share the resources of the Lanterman House and Archives in La Cañada Flintridge, will be hosting a Volunteer Coffee Hour on Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Lanterman House, starting at 10:30 a.m.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the impressive home of Dr. Roy Lanterman and his wife, Emily, is now owned by the City of La Cañada Flintridge and maintained and administered by the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation. The home, covering about 11,500 square feet, including the basement, was the first totally reinforced concrete home built west of the Mississippi River.

The Lanterman House was designed by architect Arthur Haley in 1915 and features a U-shaped Mexican Colonial hacienda design with a fountain courtyard in the middle, pergolas with plantings on all sides of the house, and English Arts and Crafts design elements throughout.

The Foundation is seeking interested community members to consider becoming a volunteer at the historic house museum.

During this informal coffee hour on Thursday, staff at the Lanterman House will welcome potential new volunteers and explain the volunteer program.

The museum offers public tours, school programs, lectures and other special events from September through July. Volunteers can train to become docents, offer hospitality and organizational support for special events, join the gardening team, or assist with behind-the-scenes activities such as holiday decorating or preparing social media posts.

Volunteers are asked to become members of the Lanterman House and attend four to six training sessions, each lasting an hour, to learn about the history of the Lanterman family and their home.

This is a free event, but please RSVP through email at lantermanhouse@gmail.com
