In an era when fitness trends come and go, one movement method has endured for nearly a century by promising complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.

The Hastings Branch Library will offer eastern Pasadena residents a free Introduction to Pilates class on Thursday, September 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The session introduces participants to what the library describes as “a whole-body method of movement focusing on the unison of breath, proper form, and flow to create a mind-body connection.”

This low-impact exercise method uses only your own resistance, with participants needing just a yoga mat.

Joseph Pilates, who developed the technique, believed that “Pilates is complete coordination of body, mind and spirit.” He stressed quality over quantity, stating that “a few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of sloppy calisthenics.”

For Pilates, the method represented transformation. “Through the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning this unique trinity of a balanced body, mind and spirit can ever be attained. Self-confidence follows,” he explained.

The library has categorized the event under Health & Wellness programming for adults. Those requiring accessibility accommodations are encouraged to contact the library before the event.

Registration may be required for the free class.

“Introduction to Pilates” will run on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Hastings Branch Library, 3325 E Orange Grove Blvd., in Pasadena. For more call (626) 744-7262 or visit https://www.cityofpasadena.net/library/calendar/?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D188986797. Tickets: Free.
