Library Continues Summer Series Around Baseball, Diversity, and Legacy

Published on Jul 17, 2022

The Pasadena Public Library continues a series of book discussions this month in celebration of the 20th anniversary of “One City, One Story,” which encourages community fellowship through the shared experience of reading.

The program started in June with author Eric Nusbaum presenting “Stealing Home, Los Angeles, the Dodgers and the Lives Caught in Between.”

Tim McDonald, Acting Director of Libraries and Information Services, said the program continues throughout July with a series of book discussions and author talks.

Each event features a different book that expands upon this summer’s “One City, One Story” themes of baseball, diversity, and legacy.

On Wednesday, July 20, author Peter Dreier presents his two new baseball books published in 2022: “Baseball Rebels: The Players, People, and Social Movements that Shook Up the Game and Changed America” and “Major League Rebels: Baseball Battles over Workers’ Rights and American Empire” in a virtual event hosted by the Pasadena Public Library. These two books reveal a captivating history of the baseball reformers and revolutionaries who challenged their sport and society-and in turn helped change America.

On Tuesday, July 26, Fred Claire takes you through his 30 years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, from the 1988 championship victory to the turmoil of the 1998 Fox purchase, as he talks about his book, “My 30 Years in Dodger Blue.” In the book, Claire reveals his personal perspective on the events that made headlines, as well as those that didn’t.

He will also discuss “Extra Innings: Fred Claire’s Journey to City of Hope and Finding a World Championship Team,” which recalls Claire’s remarkable baseball career, and recounts the miraculous story of his cancer fight at City of Hope.
