Library Hosts An Armchair Visit to Jack London State Park

Published on Jul 20, 2022

Iris Jamahl Dunkle

Award-winning literary biographer, essayist, and poet Iris Jamahl Dunkle will be leading a virtual tour of the historic Jack London State Park, located near Glen Ellen on the eastern slope of Sonoma Mountain, on Thursday, July 21, 5 to 6 p.m.

This free live reading is sponsored by the Pasadena Public Library.

At Jack London State Historic Park, the piano will be situated on the lawn surrounded by historic buildings and cultivated land, now vineyards, all once part of Jack London’s cherished ranch. This was the home base from which Jack London, John Griffith Chaney in real life, explored every canyon, glen, and hilltop on horseback.

On this site, London threw himself into farming, believing it to be an idealistic means of making a living. A significant portion of his later writing – which included “Burning Daylight” (1910), “Valley of the Moon” (1913), and “Little Lady of the Big House” (1916) – centered on the pleasures of country life, the satisfaction of making a living from the land, and remaining close to nature.

London was a novelist, journalist and activist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing.
