Live Radio Broadcast From East Pasadena Thursday Will Amplify Voices of Black Community Affected by Eaton Fire

Published on Jan 15, 2025

A Los Angeles radio station will broadcast live from East Pasadena on Thursday to amplify voices from the Black community affected by last week’s Eaton Fire, bringing attention to recovery efforts in Altadena’s historically African American neighborhoods.

The three-hour special episode of “First Things First” on KBLA Talk 1580 will air from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Pasadena Church East Campus, located at 425 Sierra Madre Villa Avenue.

The broadcast, hosted by Dominique DiPrima and co-produced by James Farr, aims to share firsthand accounts from fire survivors and community leaders while creating opportunities for affected residents to connect and learn about available support.

“The wildfires that have ravaged the greater Los Angeles community are a tragedy of epic proportions,” said Tavis Smiley, KBLA’s Chief Visionary Officer. “Dominique’s show live in the Pasadena/Altadena area will highlight personal stories and hopefully help start the recovery and rebuilding process.”

The broadcast holds particular significance as the Eaton Fire swept through an area with deep African American roots, distinguishing it from other recent disasters like the Palisades fire. While destruction is indiscriminate, numerous families now face the daunting challenge of recovery after suffering profound losses in a community that holds cultural and historical significance for Black families in the region.

KBLA Talk 1580, a heritage station broadcasting at 50,000 watts day and night, serves nearly 12 million listeners. Originally home to the iconic hip-hop station KDAY, it now boasts an all-star lineup of hosts who speak candidly about challenges facing people of color. The station, which focuses on serving historically underrepresented audiences in Los Angeles and other American cities, invites the public to “Join the conversation, be part of the live audience, and stand with Altadena.”
