Local Library Brings Teens Behind the Scenes at Black-Owned Bookstore

Event aims to inspire young readers and potential entrepreneurs through tour of Pasadena's Octavia's Bookshelf
Published on Jul 19, 2024

The Altadena Library District is offering local teens a unique glimpse into the world of independent bookselling this weekend. The event, scheduled for Saturday, July 20, at Octavia’s Bookshelf and will feature a behind-the-scenes tour led by owner Nikki High.

Participants aged 13 to 18 will learn about High’s journey as a bookstore owner and receive a free book to take home. The program aims to spark interest in literature and entrepreneurship among young people.

Octavia’s Bookshelf, located at 1365 North Hill Avenue, is dedicated to highlighting works by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) authors. Named after renowned science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler, a Pasadena native, the store has quickly become a community hub.

The bookstore is dedicated to uplifting BIPOC writers, creating space for community, and passionately encouraging a love for books. It also celebrates and honors “the words and wisdom of Pasadena hometown legend, Octavia Butler.”

Registration for the Saturday event, which runs from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., is required due to limited spots. Interested teens can sign up through the Altadena Library District’s website. The organizers strongly emphasize that registration is mandatory for participation.

This initiative reflects a growing trend of libraries partnering with local businesses to provide enriching experiences for young patrons. It also highlights the importance of supporting diverse, independent bookstores in fostering community engagement.
