Billed as “one of the world’s most popular and social trading card games,” the program is designed for absolute newcomers as well as experienced players. Librarians promise “custom made starter decks and an instructor ready to teach you everything you need to know from combat tricks to patient plotting,” giving first-timers everything required to sit down and play.
Regulars are welcome too. The announcement urges anyone who already knows the game to “bring your own personal deck and catch a few quick games,” adding that “all formats [are] invited,” so a range of casual play styles can share the same space.
The event is part of Pasadena Public Library’s ongoing effort to use games and other hands-on programs to bring people into the branch, encourage social connection and offer no-cost, low-pressure ways to learn something new.
Learn how to play MTG! will run on Monday, January 26, 2026, at 4 to 6 p.m. Hastings Branch Library, 3325 East Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena, California. For more information, call (626) 744-7262 or visit https://www.cityofpasadena.net/library/branches/hastings-library/.
