Senior-aged cats and dogs get their well-deserved chance for adoption on Saturday
This November, as Pasadena Humane celebrates Adopt a Senior Pet Month, the shelter is teaming up with AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) California to pilot “PawsConnect: Matching Older Paws with Older People,” a fee-waived adoption event, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12.
AARP staff will be onsite with free giveaways, and Pasadena Humane staff will be on hand to provide information about programs and services such as dog training, pet licensing, planned giving, and more.
People of all ages are invited to adopt any of the available pets at the shelter for no fee at this event. Adoptions include spay or neuter, a microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines. No appointment is necessary to attend. Regular adoption screening procedures will apply.
A recent study sponsored by AARP and Michigan Medicine, the University of Michigan’s academic medical center, found that 88 percent of pet owners say their pets help them enjoy life, 79 percent report having reduced stress, and over 60 percent of pet owners say their pets help keep them physically active and connected with other people.
These findings are the latest from the National Poll on Healthy Aging. According to the survey, 55 percent of older adults ages 50 to 80 have at least one pet. Dogs are the most popular pets, owned by 68 percent of respondents, followed by cats, at 48 percent, and then small pets such as birds, fish and hamsters, 16 percent.
Participants who register early for Paws Connect: Matching Older Pets with Older People will receive a free pet accessory, including a harness, retractable leash, bandana or pet toy. To register, visit www.pasadenahumane.org/phs-event/pawsconnect-matching-older-paws-with-older-people.
