El Portal Mexican Restaurant will host a vibrant celebration of Mexican Independence Day on Tuesday, Sept. 16 featuring a ceremonial “El Grito” led by Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo, live mariachi music, folkloric dancers, and a special margarita-making session by the mayor himself.
The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m., when Mayor Gordo will serve margaritas to guests until 6 p.m., according to Armando Ramirez, general manager of El Portal. At approximately 6:15 p.m., Gordo will deliver the traditional “El Grito” — a reenactment of the historic cry for independence — in front of attendees.
The event will also include performances by mariachi musicians and traditional dancers, adding cultural depth and festive energy to the evening.
“El Grito is the celebration of Mexican Independence,” Ramirez said, emphasizing the importance of honoring heritage and community through the annual gathering.
El Portal has hosted similar events in previous years, often drawing large crowds from Pasadena and surrounding areas. The restaurant is located in the heart of Playhouse Village and has become a local hub for cultural celebrations tied to Mexican food and drink, history and tradition.
El Portal Restaurant is located at 695 East Green Street in downtown Pasadena. For more information visit https://www.elportalrestaurant.com/ or call (626) 795-8553.
