Michael Feinstein, principal conductor of the Pasadena Pops, will pay tribute to Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra in a concert at the LA County Arboretum on Saturday, July 27.

The event, sponsored by Pasadena Symphony and Pops, will feature classic hits like “New York, New York” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” performed by Feinstein, known as the Ambassador of the Great American Songbook.

“Frank Sinatra is iconic in the history of American popular songs of the 20th century, and Tony Bennett continued that tradition into the 21st century,” Feinstein said in an interview with Pasadena Now.

The concert aims to highlight the similarities and differences in how Bennett and Sinatra interpreted the same songs, showcasing their unique approaches to music.

Feinstein, who knew both artists personally, expressed excitement about sharing lesser-known tracks and original orchestrations that haven’t been heard publicly in decades.

“I have actually restored several of his original orchestrations, a few of which haven’t been heard publicly in decades,” Feinstein said, referring to Sinatra’s music. He also noted access to some of Tony Bennett’s pieces from his library.

The performer emphasized the timeless nature of American popular songs, attributing their enduring appeal to their focus on fundamental aspects of life, particularly love.

“These songs are among the most eloquent and brilliant expressions of love, not only musically, but also lyrically,” Feinstein explained, drawing parallels to other classic art forms.

The LA County Arboretum, located at 301 N. Baldwin Ave. in Arcadia, provides a unique backdrop for the concert, according to Feinstein.

“It has a pastoral peaceful energy that lends itself to music making,” he said, contrasting it with more hectic venues like the Hollywood Bowl.

Feinstein stressed the importance of presenting high-quality arrangements that challenge and engage the orchestra while enhancing popular songs with symphonic performances.

The concert, conducted by Larry Blank, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. for picnicking. Feinstein will share stories about Bennett and Sinatra during the performance.
