The back room of an independent toy store might be the last place you’d expect to find live music, wine and an audience of devoted regulars — but that is precisely the magic of the Dinosaur Farm “Speakeasy” in South Pasadena.
Montana-based songwriter and activist Quenby and Miss Emily (Emily Fennel) take the stage for Wine and Song on Wednesday, April 8 at 7 p.m. at the Dinosaur Farm, 1510 Mission St. in South Pasadena. Guests enter from the back alley.
Wine and Song is a weekly Wednesday series that rotates among venues along South Pasadena’s Mission Street corridor, pairing intimate live performances with a serve-yourself wine setup and an atmosphere that one music writer described as loose, warm and wonderfully offbeat. The Dinosaur Farm, founded in 1994 by musician and songwriter David Plenn, has operated as both a beloved neighborhood toy and book shop and, more recently, an unlikely concert venue. The store has been recognized by USA Today as one of the nation’s top 10 independent toy stores and by BuzzFeed as one of 17 toy stores in the world that will change children’s lives.
The Speakeasy’s split-level seating puts audience members practically elbow-to-elbow with the performers — an intimacy impossible to replicate in a conventional venue.
