The voice that turned “At Last” into an eternal anthem belongs to a Los Angeles native whose journey from gospel pews to rock ’n’ roll innovation defined an era.
On Tuesday, October 14, MUSE/IQUE will present “Have You Ever Heard of Etta James? The Guts and Triumph of An American Icon.”
In 1960, James’s recording of “At Last” on Argo Records became her signature song and was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
James understood that artistry meant more than technical perfection.
“My mother always told me, even if a song has been done a thousand times, you can still bring something of your own to it. I’d like to think I did that,” she wrote in her 1995 autobiography Rage to Survive.
