MUSE/IQUE Continues L.A. Composed Series With Genre-Defying Sounds of “Whittier Boulevard”

Published on Jul 19, 2022

MUSE/IQUE returns to the grounds of the The Huntington with “Whittier Boulevard,” a story of musical eclecticism where Mexican American musicians blended music from all across Los Angeles to create a whole new genre-defying sound, on Wednesday, July 20.

“Whittier Boulevard” is part of MUSE/IQUE’s 2021-2022 season, L.A. Composed: A Festival of Los Angeles Music. The event will  be held at the Chinese Garden at The Huntington.

More than any other street, Whittier Blvd. In Los Angeles tells the story of musical eclecticism. On Whittier Boulevard, Mexican American musicians blended music from all across Los Angeles to create a whole new genre-defying sound and flavor that scintillates and tantalizes with an instantly identifiable beat.

With influences ranging from the coastal rock ‘n’ roll of The Beach Boys to the Motown rhythms of Sam Cooke, “Whittier” represents what happens when a fusion of sounds is filtered through Mexican American culture and experience to become something entirely new.

This performance is a life-affirming tribute to the grooving Chicano sounds that form the heartbeat of Los Angeles. “Whittier” features Latin GRAMMY winner Gaby Moreno, who made her smash debut on the MUSE/IQUE stage last season in Dylan Goes Hollywood, along with esteemed guest Willie “Little Willie G” Garcia (often nicknamed the Godfather of Brown-Eyed Soul) of the band Thee Midniters, who wrote the song “Whittier Blvd.”

On Wednesday, doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7:30 p.m.
