The evening’s centerpiece is “In For Me (Infamy),” a new collaboration between company members Jenn Logan and Nancy Evans Doede inspired by A Noise Within’s production of Eugène Ionesco’s “Exit the King.” Three figures embody different stages of the same leader — ambition, authority, and reflection — in a satirical dance-theatre work about the seductive rise and inevitable unraveling of public-image power. The program also includes choreographer Ashleigh Doede’s “In Pursuit,” a playful piece inspired by the television series “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?”, and Jackie Pierce’s “CAPTCHA,” a meditation on artificial intelligence and the uneasy boundary between human intuition and machine logic.
Nancy Evans Dance Theatre, founded in 2009, is one of the few remaining truly modern-dance-based companies in the Los Angeles area; Doede has resisted folding the form into the broader contemporary-dance category, holding to a lineage that traces back through Nancy Hauser and Hanya Holm to the German Expressionist pioneer Mary Wigman. The company shares residency at Porticos Art Space in Pasadena.
Performances run May 9 and 16 at 8 p.m. and May 10 and 17 at 4 p.m., all at ARC. A Q&A with the choreographers and dancers follows the May 17 performance. The May 17 evening also concludes with a gala reception.
