This afternoon Pasadena based modern dance company Nancy Evans Dance Theatre (NEDT) will present its final performance this season of Works 2023: “Thresholds” at ARC Pasadena at 1158 East Colorado Blvd.
The performance is part of an exciting program featuring IMPRINT, a series of pieces inspired by the lithography of six artists. It takes place at 4 p.m.
Nancy Evans Doede, Artistic Director for the Dance Theatre, said the dance company has woven props and unique music into their performances.
“The idea of Thresholds came from us stepping into new territory, but really doing it in a collaborative fashion, which was really fun for us.”
Doede said the performance involved some classic modern dance. The music that will be used for the show is by Michael Wall.
Doede said the team started working on the project twice a week starting September. They faced several challenges while creating it.“There were constant challenges. A prop didn’t work the way we thought it was going to work, so we changed it. A costume didn’t work the way we thought it was going to work, so we had to change it. It was a real collaborative process along the way because we’re building costumes that are also part of the scenery, which speaks to expressionist dance beautifully.”
“As a choreographer and a visionary, you have to align yourself with where the dance wants to go. And so that means you might have to change everything about what you thought you were going to do.”
Doede hopes the audience for their upcoming show will take away a sense of curiosity on what they saw.
“They’re going to walk away having the performance linger with them for a while so that it continues to be thought provoking for them.”
According to Doede, there will be question and answer sessions with the performers immediately after the Saturday night performances.
NEDT is a modern-based company established in 2009 under Doede’s artistic direction.
NEDT has performed in various festivals, including the 4th-7th Annual Pasadena Dance Festivals, TriArt Festival, MixMatch, Awakenings & Beginnings and ArtNight Pasadena.
The group is committed to create original works of dance theater that celebrate the value of storytelling by and for every generation; to feature typically underutilized mature artists from 30 to 60 and beyond; to expose new and diverse audiences to the beauty of life experience through traditional and non-traditional movement language; to empower our artists to be co-creators; to make lasting human connections.
