The park is the story as much as the party is.
Loma Alta Park closed after the January 2025 Eaton Fire and reopened May 17, 2025, following a $3.4 million renovation — the first of Altadena’s county parks to reopen after the fire, according to the county Department of Parks and Recreation. The rebuild added two Dodgers Dreamfields, a gymnasium renovated by the LA Clippers Foundation, a satellite senior center and a technology center. The county said it compressed a rebuild that would normally take about 18 months into roughly two.
On Saturday, Aug. 15, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Altadena Sheriff’s Station invites the community to celebrate National Night Out on the lower lawn at 3330 N. Lincoln Ave. Residents can meet their neighbors and Sheriff’s deputies, learn about community resources, enjoy free food, hear live music and take part in activities for children.
“The community asked for the park to reopen, and knew we needed to meet the moment. Here we are, as promised, just two months later,” Norma E. García-González, director of Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation, said at the May 2025 reopening.
The scheduling is deliberate and worth noting: the evening does not end at 7 p.m. The Rotary Club of Altadena’s free summer concert begins at 7 p.m. on the same lawn, which means families can arrive in the afternoon and stay through the music without moving the car.
For a community still rebuilding, an afternoon of free food in a park the fire closed carries more weight than the phrase “community event” suggests.
National Night Out takes place Saturday, Aug. 15, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Lower Loma Alta Park, 3330 N. Lincoln Ave., in Altadena. Admission is free. Free food, live music and children’s activities.
