A free workshop aimed at helping adults over 50 begin writing their memoirs will be hosted by Pasadena Village, a nonprofit supporting aging-in-place seniors, officials announced.

The January 23 Village Connections event will feature Pat Kramer, owner of Writer For Hire, leading participants through the memoir-writing process at Washington Park Community House.

The session runs from 2 to 3:30 p.m., beginning with a social period featuring complimentary coffee and tea from 2 to 2:30 p.m., before the main presentation begins.

Kramer, who began writing memoirs in 2008, brings personal experience to the workshop.

“I began writing memoirs in 2008 as a way to connect with my ancestors,” she said in a statement. “In the process of researching my own family history, I began meeting cousins who I had never met before and many who I had not communicated with in many years. I was able to build the histories of all four of my grandparents, going back to ‘the old country.’ I loved doing this so much that I began offering this service to my clients.”

Pasadena Village currently maintains three active memoir and creative writing groups, with another group percolating, according to event organizers, who encourage attendees to learn about joining supportive groups after the presentation.

The memoir workshop is part of a broader Clifford Swan-sponsored series, with upcoming events including Peace & Love Schmoozendoodle on Jan. 30, 2025; African American Poets gathering on Feb. 20, and LGBTQ+ Prepare to Care on Feb. 27.

Altadena-based photo and digital preservation coach and Forever.com Brand Ambassador Patti La Marr is organizing the event, which is open to all participants and takes place at 700 E. Washington Boulevard in Pasadena.
