A six-week drawing series designed to enhance sketchbook practice and visual storytelling skills continues today at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, offering artists of all experience levels an opportunity to refine their craft. The program, led by artist and educator Richard Houston, will guide participants through different areas of the museum’s collection each week.

This Friday’s session focuses on “Simplifying the Subject,” the first step in developing what Houston describes as a “visual shorthand for rapid idea expression.” Subsequent classes will explore visual memory, storytelling, invention, costume design, and techniques for capturing light and value.

Sessions run every Friday, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and are aimed to strengthen observational skills and help participants build their own visual reference libraries. The program strategically skips the museum’s Free First Fridays to maintain consistent scheduling throughout the series.

“Developing a sketching practice can lead to continuous improvement,” the museum said in describing the program, highlighting the practical benefits of regular sketchbook work. The program welcomes artists of all experience levels, with all necessary materials provided to participants.

The complete six-class program costs $180, with museum members receiving a discounted rate of $144. Registration is limited to 20 participants, and advance registration is required for all attendees.

Classes will meet in the Entrance Gallery of the Norton Simon Museum, located at 411 W. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. The series continues through April 25, and missed classes are not eligible for reimbursement.
