The Norton Simon Museum will present four public programs on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 411 W. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, according to the dated program pages the museum publishes for each event. All four are free with museum admission.

The afternoon opens with two programs at 1 p.m. Fall Harvest, part of the museum’s Family Day series, runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and is led by a museum educator. The program page says participants will examine artworks connected to the season, including Georges Lacombe’s “Autumn: The Chestnut Gatherers,” then make art using fall colors, themes and motifs. It is designed for families with children ages 4 to 12, advance registration is encouraged, and the group meets in the Entrance Gallery.

Also at 1 p.m., a museum educator leads “Sculpture from around the World,” a one-hour tour on how sculpture across cultures and time periods communicates ideas through form and material. Space is limited to 20 participants, and sign-ups are taken at the Information Desk when the museum opens, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Second Saturday Sketching follows from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The drop-in program provides materials at the Main Entrance and uses guided prompts tied to the collections, with sketchers invited afterward to the Sculpture Garden. The museum lists it for visitors of all ages and says no reservations are necessary.

The day closes with “Checkmate! Chess at the Norton Simon Museum,” from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Sculpture Garden. Jay Stallings is listed as the program’s speaker, and the museum’s page says visitors can learn the rules from a U.S. chess expert. Space and chess sets are limited, no reservations are taken, and the program is recommended for all ages.

General admission is $20 for adults and $15 for seniors 62 and above. Admission is free for museum members, students with valid identification and everyone 18 and under. The museum is open from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturdays.

All program details in this article come from the Norton Simon Museum’s published event pages for each program.
