The Norton Simon Museum will spotlight the man behind its renowned galleries with a one-hour public tour, “Norton Simon, the Collector,” on Friday, Feb. 6, coinciding with the museum’s Free First Friday.

The 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. tour, led by a museum educator, invites visitors to “learn about Norton Simon and the stories behind how he built an exceptional and cohesive art collection.”

Space is limited to 20 participants, with sign-ups beginning when the museum opens at the Information Desk on a first-come, first-served basis.

Because Feb. 6 is a Free First Friday, admission for all visitors is complimentary from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., covering the entire hour of the tour.

Norton Winfred Simon, born Feb. 5, 1907, in Portland, Ore., built a fortune from a bankrupt orange juice bottling plant he bought in 1929 and later turned into a conglomerate that included Hunt-Wesson Foods and other major brands. Retiring in 1969 to focus on art, he acquired more than 8,000 works over three decades, ranging from Old Masters and French Impressionists to South and Southeast Asian sculpture.

The Norton Simon Museum is at 411 W. Colorado Blvd., in Pasadena, with free parking and accessible facilities.
