An octopus that composes the greatest piece of music ever heard takes center stage in “Octopus’s Garden,” a world-premiere play at Boston Court Pasadena.

Written by Los Angeles-based playwright Weston Gaylord and directed by Boston Court Artistic Director Jessica Kubzansky, the production is a three-way co-production with Circle X Theatre Co. and Outside In Theatre.

Described as “a funny, soulful fable about beauty, science, and cephalopods,” the play follows two marine biologists and a struggling composer whose lives begin to unravel after the octopus in their cephalopod lab writes music of extraordinary power.

Ambitions clash, egos fray and their encounter with something seemingly divine raises moral questions about what happens when a nonhuman being surpasses human capability.

The octopus, a Giant Pacific Octopus named Sylvia, is brought to life through innovative puppetry operated by three puppeteers with “expansive, searching tentacles,” adding a visual spectacle to the intimate Main Stage venue.

Boston Court Pasadena, known for its season of “adventurous theatre,” is presenting the production as the first play of its 2026 theatre season.

“Octopus’s Garden” will run on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Boston Court Pasadena, 70 N. Mentor Ave., in Pasadena 91106. For more call (626) 683-6801 or visit https://bostoncourtpasadena.org/events/octopus/. Tickets: $25 to $47.
