One Colorado will celebrate National Pollinator Week with a family-friendly environmental event today featuring hands-on workshops and educational activities designed to support local pollinator populations.
The “BEE Kind to Our Planet” celebration takes place Sunday, June 22, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the One Colorado Courtyard as part of the national week-long initiative to raise awareness about declining pollinator populations.
The event centerpiece features a Pollinator Plant Workshop hosted by Twigzz, where visitors can create mini potted plants to take home and nurture pollinators in their neighborhoods. The workshop operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Additional activities include meeting local beekeepers at an information booth, viewing fresh honey displays and sampling honeybee lemonade made with honey harvested from One Colorado’s own bees. Attendees can also photograph themselves at One Colorado’s floral backdrop and shop sustainable brands.
The first 200 guests who sign up for One Colorado’s mobile program and follow the shopping center on Instagram will receive locally harvested honey from One Colorado’s bees.
National Pollinator Week runs from June 16 through June 22 under this year’s theme “Pollinators Weave Connections.” The initiative received unanimous approval from the U.S. Senate and has grown into an international celebration.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than one-third of all food crops depend on pollinators. Between 75 and 95 percent of all flowering plants on Earth need help with pollination, with pollinators providing services to over 180,000 different plant species.
Pollinator populations have been declining due to habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change, making community education and habitat creation increasingly important.
