Overdose Prevention Will Be Focus of San Marino Health and Wellness Event

Published on Jul 26, 2022

The City of San Marino’s Recreation Department is sponsoring a discussion on Wednesday, July 27, to teach residents and others who are interested about what opioids are, what are the myths about overdose, how to recognize signs of an overdose, and how to prevent an overdose.

In this “Health and Wellness Talk – Overdose Prevention” at the Crowell Public Library, the training portion will provide information about administering Naloxone, an FDA-approved life-saving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription Paroxetine medications

The discussion begins at 1 p.m. and is planned to continue until 2:30 p.m.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Naloxone is an emergency treatment for an opioid overdose, which can happen when someone takes too much of an opioid or takes it with certain other medicines or substances, such as alcohol.

An opioid overdose is a medical emergency that can result in death, the FDA says. Naloxone works quickly to block the effects of opioids and temporarily reverses the breathing problems caused by the overdose, which can help prevent death. Naloxone can be given safely to people of all ages, from infants to elderly adults. This includes a child who has or may have accidentally taken an opioid pain reliever or medicine to treat opioid use disorder (OUD).

Crowell Public Library, located at 1890 Huntington Drive in San Marino, is now fully open and has returned to its normal operating hours, which are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Masks are required of all visitors who come into the library.

Attendance at the talk is free. For more information, call Victoria Marshall at (626) 403-2200 or email recreation@cityofsanmarino.org
