A collaborative exhibition opening Monday at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles showcases how emerging designers from California and Japan are reimagining the shared experience of dining through design innovation.

Pacific Rim 18: TasteMaking LA presents final projects from ten student teams exploring how design and food culture can bridge people and traditions across continents. From street food innovations to fine dining experiences, students created designs addressing tableware, lighting, and the social customs that shape how we share meals.

“This special exhibition explores how design and food culture can bridge people and traditions across continents, reimagining the rituals of dining through innovative student projects that span from street food to fine dining,” according to program materials.

The Pacific Rim project is a 19-year international collaboration established in 2006 between ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and Tokyo’s Tama Art University. At ArtCenter, the program is led by associate professors Dan Gottlieb and Penny Herscovitch, who have served as co-leads since 2007.

From Tama Art University, Tatsuya Wada, professor and chair of Product Design, has anchored the collaboration since its inception. “It was important that the students make a bond with each other—American students, Japanese students,” he said in program materials. “Of course, there is a difference of culture and they needed to understand each other and make a team.”

JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, a cultural initiative of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is hosting the exhibition as part of its continued commitment to supporting art, education, and cross-cultural exchange.

Pacific Rim 18: TasteMaking LA will run on Monday, Dec. 15 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, 6801 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles. For more call (800) 516-0565 or visit https://www.artcenter.edu/connect/events/pacific-rim-18-tastemaking-la.html.
