Parson’s Nose Theater is presenting a December readers’ theater production of “A Christmas Carol” in Pasadena, aiming to connect contemporary audiences with Charles Dickens’ classic tale through language-focused performance and accessible ticketing.
The nonprofit frames the show as part of its mission “to make classic theater and literature more accessible,” using a radio-theater style that relies on narration, sound, and imagination rather than elaborate staging.
The production is presented as Parson’s Nose Radio Theater of the Air in a Readers’ Theater format at Parson’s Nose Abbey, 95 North Marengo Avenue in Pasadena.
Narrators Barry Gordon, a Tony Award nominee and former Screen Actors Guild president, and co-founder Mary Chalon lead the storytelling, with Artistic Director Lance Davis adapting the text and sharing sound design duties with David Bennett. The show runs about one hour and 20 minutes in its podcast form and 99 minutes with intermission for the live presentation.
Performances are scheduled for December 13, 14, and 15, with several dates sold out. Tickets range from $15 to $30, plus fees, with reservations strongly recommended through the company’s website or by phone at (626) 345-5116. Founded in May 2000 by Lance Davis and Mary Chalon, Parson’s Nose Theater is a professional Actors’ Equity, 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has presented more than 85 classic theater adaptations and 40 Readers’ Theater presentations, reaching more than 80,000 adults and children across Los Angeles County. The production is sponsored by Mario and Therese Molina and supported in part by a $27,000 General Operating Relief grant from the California Arts Council.
