Parson’s Nose Theater Tackles Cultural Tensions With ’Bully for You’

Two-act production moves from comedy to chilling 1934 warning about Nazi Germany

In an era when audiences crave both escape and engagement, Parson’s Nose Theater in Pasadena is leaning into the contradiction. “The arts are at a crossroads,” says Lance Davis, the theater’s co-founder and artistic director. “Audiences want to both escape and engage. Do artists stay silent or speak out? Hence, Bully for You!”

The production, running Saturday, September 27 at 7 p.m., presents a provocative exploration of bullying that moves from comedy to historical warning. True to the theater’s mission of introducing classic theater in under 90 minutes, Act One features comedic sketches by Kenneth Koch, Anton Chekhov, George White’s Follies of 1925, The Kingston Trio, and George Gershwin. Act Two shifts dramatically to Kathrine Kressmann Taylor’s “Address Unknown,” a 1934 work that presciently anticipated Nazi horrors.

Davis has adapted and directed the production, featuring performers Mary Chalon, Ivar Brogger, Jill Rogosheske, James Calvert, Marisa Chandler, Barry Gordon, and Paul Perri.

The theater at 95 N. Marengo Avenue in Pasadena offers wheelchair-accessible seating through its step-free Holly Street entrance. Free street parking is available on Holly Street after 6 p.m., with additional parking at 150 E. Holly Street. The theater recommends arriving by 6:30 p.m. for optimal seating.
