Will Downing, the owner of Window Wizards, has turned his block on Grayburn Road in The Chapman Woods of Pasadena into a Halloween spectacle, demonstrating his company’s lighting expertise and strengthening community ties. The ambitious project involved transforming the homes on the block with custom-cut lights, totaling a $20,000 worth of work. “It was essentially a win-win situation for everybody,” said Downing. “The community gets to enjoy the lights, and it was a great training situation for our new technicians.”

Downing’s goals for the light show were multifaceted. Besides showcasing his company’s capabilities to potential Christmas lighting clients, he aimed to create a family-friendly experience for the neighborhood. “The goal was to make the street look amazing and have everybody in Pasadena know that we exist,” Downing explained. “It’s also an opportunity to attract more trick-or-treaters this year.”

Planning for the project involved extensive coordination with the residents of the 3600-3700 block of Grayburn Road. Most neighbors were eager to participate in the free event. The most challenging part, Downing noted, was getting everyone on board and scheduling the installations. “We custom-cut the lights for each house, and we had to plan out how much equipment we were going to need, which houses to do on what specific days, and who would work on each house,” he said.

Each house featured alternating purple and orange lights along its roofline, with additional lighting on four large trees, including a towering 50-foot palm tree. Safety was a top priority, with the team carrying liability and workers’ compensation insurance. “Our project adds light to the street, making it safer for trick-or-treaters,” said Downing. Care was also taken to avoid placing cords across areas where children might walk.

To promote the event, Window Wizards utilized social media, word of mouth, and direct customer interactions. Downing plans to switch the lights to Christmas colors in November, keeping the festive atmosphere alive through the holiday season. “I love seeing the kids’ faces when they see the lights for the first time,” he said, adding that he hopes to make the light show an annual tradition.
