For nearly a decade, Pasadena Federal Credit Union (PFCU) has been dedicated to empowering local youth with meaningful financial education. Since 2018, Pasadena Service FCU, now merged with Pasadena FCU, has proudly operated a student-run branch at John Muir High School, providing hands-on experience in financial services and money management. Alongside this initiative, the credit union has hosted the Bite of Reality program with John Muir students for almost seven years, positively impacting hundreds of young lives.
What is Bite of Reality?
Bite of Reality is a fast-paced, interactive financial literacy simulation that immerses students in the realities of adulthood. Participants assume personas complete with a career, income, family, and financial responsibilities. From budgeting for housing, groceries, childcare, and transportation to managing unexpected expenses, students must make tough decisions that mirror real-life challenges. This hands-on approach teaches not only the mechanics of budgeting but also critical thinking, financial resilience, and the consequences of choices.
Why it matters
Financial education is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Shockingly, a 2021 Fall Piper Sandler survey about financial literacy found that 35% of teens surveyed did not have a bank account. Without even basic access to safe financial tools, many struggle to learn how to manage money effectively. Bite of Reality steps directly into that gap, giving students a simulated but impactful experience that builds confidence and competence.
Broadening the reach: YWCA of San Gabriel Valley
PFCU’s commitment does not stop at high schools. The credit union has extended its Bite of Reality sessions to community organizations like the YWCA of San Gabriel Valley, whose mission is to eliminate racism, empower women, and champion justice and dignity for all. Serving over 800 homebound seniors and survivors of domestic violence across 30 cities, the YWCA also supports youth and low-income families, making this partnership a powerful match for the shared goal of financial inclusion.
Studies show that financial literacy among teens is low, but its impact is high. By equipping young people with practical budgeting skills, Bite of Reality lays the foundation for responsible financial habits, informed decision-making, and long-term stability.
Join the effort to make an impact
Pasadena Federal Credit Union invites schools, nonprofits, and community organizations to collaborate on future Bite of Reality sessions.
“Together, we can create learning opportunities that foster financial empowerment and build brighter futures for young people,” said Social Impact Manager Rick Flores.
