Pasadena Humane is set to host an unusual nature walk combining birding, plant identification, and mindful meditation at the JPL Bridge in Altadena. The event, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 9, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. offers participants an opportunity to explore local flora and fauna.
Led by Certified California Naturalists from Pasadena Humane’s wildlife staff, the walk will take place along the JPL/Devil’s Gate Dam loop. Attendees will learn to identify native plants and local birds while practicing mindfulness techniques.
“Embrace a slow and mindful pace to practice following your breath and being present in your body as you connect with the other living things on the trail,” the event description explains. This approach aims to enhance participants’ connection with nature.
The organizers encourage the use of community science tools such as ebird, Merlin Bird ID, and iNaturalist apps. They will provide assistance to those interested in using these applications on their smartphones during the walk.
While the event is suitable for all ages, it is primarily geared toward adults. The walk covers less than 2 miles and is expected to last approximately 1.5 hours, shortened due to summer heat.
Participants are advised to bring their own scopes, binoculars, or cameras. Pasadena Humane will provide a limited number of field guidebooks for reference during the walk.
The terrain includes minor elevation changes, uneven and unpaved ground, and some stairs. Attendees are encouraged to wear layers that can be easily removed as temperatures rise, along with sun protection and appropriate footwear.
Dogs are not permitted on the walk to avoid disturbing the birds. Parking is available at the JPL Bridge, located at Explorer Road. Participants can look for the Pasadena Humane van as a meeting point.
Tickets for the event are priced at $7.18, with refunds available up to seven days before the event date. Eventbrite’s fee is nonrefundable. Pasadena Humane encourages carpooling, biking, or using public transportation to reach the location.
