Comic book fans looking for something to do on Free Comic Book Day won’t need to go far — or spend anything — to join the celebration.

The Pasadena Public Library’s Santa Catalina Branch is hosting a free button-making activity on Saturday, May 2, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., inviting attendees of all ages to create comic book-themed buttons at the East Washington Boulevard branch. All supplies will be provided, according to the library’s promotional materials.

The event coincides with Free Comic Book Day, an annual nationwide celebration held on the first Saturday in May since 2002. The event was conceived by California comic book retailer Joe Field and has grown to include more than 2,000 comic shops and libraries across North America each year, according to the event’s organizers.

Santa Catalina Branch, at 999 East Washington Boulevard., is one of the oldest branches in the Pasadena Public Library system, dating to 1913. The current building opened in 1931. The branch serves the surrounding neighborhoods with collections in English, Armenian, Spanish, and French, and hosts regular programs for children, families, and adults.

The branch’s event offers a local, hands-on way to mark the occasion, inviting attendees to bring their comic book knowledge and turn it into buttons.

The event is open to all ages and no registration has been announced. The branch has five parking spaces on site.
