The author talk is a virtual program presented in partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium, which makes free streamed conversations with bestselling authors available across hundreds of public libraries. Registration is required in advance through the Pasadena Public Library website. The hour will include a presentation by Kamali and a live audience question-and-answer session.
Kamali, born in Turkey to Iranian parents, is the author of three novels — “The Lion Women of Tehran,” “The Stationery Shop” and “Together Tea” — and the 2022 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Award. Her work has been translated into more than 30 languages. She lives with her family in the Boston area.
“The Lion Women of Tehran” was a New York Times bestseller and has been chosen by book clubs nationwide. Set against the political turbulence of the 1953 Anglo-American backed coup, the rise of the Shah, and the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the book opens with Ellie, a 7-year-old in 1950s Tehran whose comfortable life is upended by her father’s death and who finds salvation in a friendship with a girl named Homa. The novel resonates against the ongoing Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran.
The author talk with Marjan Kamali will run on Thursday, May 7 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Virtual event presented by Pasadena Public Library and the Library Speakers Consortium. To register and for more information, visit cityofpasadena.net/library. Admission is free. Registration required.
