Pasadena Library to Host Cultural Celebration for Latino Heritage Month

Event at La Pintoresca branch aims to engage community with stories, music and crafts
Published on Sep 17, 2024

The La Pintoresca Branch Library in Pasadena will host “Fiesta La Pintoresca” on Wednesday, Oct. 2, as part of the city’s Latino Heritage Month celebrations.

The event, from 4 to 5 p.m., will feature cultural stories, music, and crafts, according to organizers. It is designed to appeal to a broad audience, including children, families, infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

Latino Heritage Month, also known as Hispanic Heritage Month, is observed annually in the United States from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. The month-long celebration honors the cultural heritage, history, and contributions of Latinos and Hispanics to the nation.

The timing of the observance is significant, as it encompasses the independence days of several Latin American countries. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all celebrate their independence on Sept. 15.

Mexico and Chile mark their independence days on Sept. 16 and 18, respectively. The month serves as a time to recognize the impact of Latinos and Hispanics on American society, including in the arts, politics, education, and the economy.

The La Pintoresca Branch Library, built in 1930, is located in northwest Pasadena and serves as both a library and community center. Named after a hotel that previously occupied the site, it is situated in the most highly populated service area of any Pasadena Branch.

Its collection includes approximately 33,600 volumes, with an emphasis on Spanish language materials for both adults and juveniles, focusing on browsing and casual reading. The library also offers Criterion Collection films on DVD, resources on social justice, and a Citizenship collection.

For those interested in attending “Fiesta La Pintoresca,” contact the library at (626) 744-7268 for accessibility information and requests. Providing at least 72 hours’ notice will help ensure availability, library officials said.

The event is part of a broader series of programs related to Latino Heritage Month in Pasadena. For a full list of programs, including free events, crafts, story times, and book discussions, residents can visit CityOfPasadena.net/Library or CityOfPasadena.net/Parks-And-Rec

Library programming in Pasadena is sponsored by The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library, a local support organization. The La Pintoresca Branch Library, which is also home to many works of art, is located at 1355 N. Raymond Avenue.
