For seven years, a dedicated group has gathered monthly in Pasadena to discuss literature and build community across the spectrum of human communication abilities.
The iBook Club, designed for “New Adult” readers in their 20s and 30s, including participants who use speech-generating devices, represents an accessible approach to library programming.
The club’s next virtual meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 8 from 3 to 5 p.m., hosted by Hastings Branch Library through Zoom.
Since launching in 2018, the monthly gatherings have drawn approximately 15 participants, including post-secondary persons and their communication partners across all abilities.
The program creates space for readers who might otherwise find traditional book clubs inaccessible.
The club’s impact recently caught media attention.
Registration requires providing an email address where Zoom login instructions will be sent.
The library requests 72 hours advance notice for accessibility accommodations.
Hastings Branch Library, one of the hosting locations, opened February 17, 1959, as the eighth and final branch in Pasadena’s plan to bring library service within a mile of every home.
The iBook Club continues this tradition of inclusive service, proving that literature and community discussion can flourish when barriers to participation are thoughtfully removed.
“iBook Club” will run on Monday, September 8 at 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. online via Zoom, hosted by Hastings Branch Library, 3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd., in Pasadena.
