Pasadena Playhouse performs “The Visit” at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, half an hour later than the two performances that preceded it this week.

The theater designated the Sept. 9 performance its Wine Wednesday and described that date as the preview-week Wednesday, according to the Playhouse’s website.

The Playhouse lists Friday’s performance as selling fast, as of Sept. 10.

Saturday, Sept. 12 brings the first matinee of the run, at 2 p.m., alongside an 8 p.m. performance. As of Sept. 10, the Playhouse lists the matinee as limited and marks the Sept. 16 and Sept. 18 performances as best prices.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s play, adapted by Maurice Valency and directed by Darko Tresnjak, runs two hours including a 15-minute intermission. Jefferson Mays plays Anton Schill and Melinda Page Hamilton plays Claire Zachanassian, described by the Playhouse as the richest woman in the world, who returns to her struggling hometown ready to rescue it from ruin on one condition.

Dürrenmatt, a playwright born in Switzerland who died in 1990, wrote “The Visit” in 1956. Valency’s version of the play became the basis of the Kander and Ebb Broadway musical.

Mays and Tresnjak are both Tony Award winners and both worked on the Playhouse’s production of “Amadeus” last season, in which Mays played Salieri. Tresnjak won his Tony for directing “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.”

The theater is at 39 S. El Molino Ave. in Pasadena. Tickets start at $40, and the Playhouse says groups of 10 or more can save up to 35 percent by contacting patron services at boxoffice@pasadenaplayhouse.org. The theater’s phone number is (626) 356-7529.

Three later dates carry additions. The Playhouse has designated the 7:30 p.m. performance on Sept. 22 a Talkback Tuesday. The theater offers onsite childcare during the 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Sept. 26, with a theater workshop for children ages 5 through 12. The 2 p.m. performance on Sunday, Sept. 27 is both open-captioned and audio-described.

The run closes Oct. 4.
