Lerner & Loewe’s Brigadoon, in a newly adapted version of the 1947 musical, is in its final week of performances at The Pasadena Playhouse and closes Sunday, June 14.
The production — directed and choreographed by Katie Spelman, with a new book by Alexandra Silber inspired by Alan Jay Lerner’s original — stars Max von Essen as Tommy Albright and Tyne Daly as Widow Lundie, a role originally written as Mr. Lundie. Tickets start at $44, according to the Pasadena Playhouse. The Playhouse is at 39 S. El Molino Ave., south of Altadena.
The musical tells the story of two American travelers who lose their way in the Scottish Highlands and stumble into a village that appears for only one day every 100 years. Brigadoon premiered on Broadway in 1947 and, according to Playbill, has not received a major Broadway revival since 1980.
Silber’s adaptation reimagines the two American travelers as modern-day friends from New Jersey, and ages the principal romantic pairs from their 20s and 30s into their 40s and 50s, according to TheaterMania.
“In 2026, we are arguably the most connected we’ve ever been as a world, yet you’re seeing all these stats about how isolated and lonely people are,” Spelman told TheaterMania. “Watching these avatars of ours step into a place with no technology, and yet, so much more connection, life, and breath, it points to the humanity that is necessary for us all to live and survive.”
The cast also includes Betsy Morgan as Fiona MacLaren, Happy Anderson as Jeff Douglas, Daniel Yearwood as Charlie Dalrymple and Donna Vivino as Meg. Jason Sherwood designed the scenery. The production features a live orchestra, according to the Pasadena Playhouse.
The Playhouse — described on TodayTix’s venue page as the official State Theater of California and a 2023 Regional Theatre Tony Award winner — opened the production on May 13 with an official opening night May 17.
In a review excerpted by the Pasadena Playhouse, Los Angeles Times theater critic Charles McNulty wrote: “May be the best local staging of a musical I’ve seen in my 20 years covering the scene for The Times.”
Remaining performances run through Sunday. Show times are 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 7 p.m. Thursday; and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, according to the Pasadena Playhouse.
