The Rotary Club of Pasadena will hear from Danny Jensen, author of “Unique Eats and Eateries of Los Angeles,” at its Wednesday, Sept. 16 lunch at the University Club of Pasadena, 175 N. Oakland Ave. The lunch is open to non-members by reservation.

The noon talk is one of several fall dates the club is promoting to the public, according to its weekly Spokes newsletter and its online calendar: a Sept. 19 garden work day at John Muir High School, an Oct. 3 Habitat for Humanity home build in Altadena and an Oct. 8 “Join and Thrive” evening at PasArroyo that pairs a screening of the documentary “Join or Die” with a “Joining Fair” of local clubs and organizations.

Jensen has spent 16 years writing about the food and people of Los Angeles, according to his publisher, Reedy Press. The new book, subtitled “The People and Stories Behind the Food,” is a 192-page guide to historic delis, diners and food halls, experimental innovators, multigenerational immigrant-founded businesses and mission-driven restaurants, the publisher says; it lists for $27. Jensen is also the author of “LA Scavenger,” “Secret Los Angeles” and “100 Things to Do in Los Angeles Before You Die,” and his writing and photography have appeared in Yahoo Travel, Culinary Backstreets, Time Out, Thrillist and on PBS, according to Reedy Press. Justene Adamec will introduce him.

The club meets Wednesdays at noon at the University Club. Non-members are welcome for $45, which includes lunch, and the club asks for reservations by 5 p.m. Monday, the newsletter said; the meeting is also carried on Zoom beginning at noon.

The Oct. 8 “Join and Thrive” event runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the movie and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for the Joining Fair at PasArroyo, 251 S. Lake Ave., according to the event’s Eventbrite listing, which sets doors at 4:45 p.m. The Sept. 4 newsletter said tickets are available through Eventbrite and that $25 VIP packages supporting Pasadena Rotary are offered. The club’s calendar lists the Joining Fair for Oct. 8 at 5 p.m.

In the Sept. 4 newsletter, club member Paul Roach invited members to the screening, describing “Join or Die” as a film that examines America’s social fabric over the past 50 years, followed by a joining fair of local organizations and clubs. The Eventbrite listing describes the documentary as an exploration of why social and civic connections matter, and says the fair that follows will let attendees meet representatives of local clubs, hobby groups, volunteer circles and civic organizations.

Two volunteer dates come first. Club members will prepare the student garden at John Muir High School on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.; no skill is required and friends and family are welcome, the club’s calendar and newsletter say. On Saturday, Oct. 3, starting at 7:45 a.m., the club joins a Habitat for Humanity build of a home for a family in Altadena, with sign-ups through San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity, according to the calendar. A Run for Polio 5K walk and run follows on Oct. 24 at 8 a.m., with an optional breakfast afterward at Brookside Golf Club, according to the calendar.

The Sept. 4 newsletter listed distance runner and author Raziq Rauf as the scheduled speaker for the club’s Sept. 9 lunch.

Coming lunch speakers, according to the club’s calendar: Daniel Silver of the University of Southern California Center for Applied Research in Education on student absenteeism, Sept. 23; Aaron Fyke of Thin Line Capital on clean energy, Sept. 30; percussionist Danny Peterson, Oct. 7; David Judson of Judson Studios on stained glass, Oct. 14; and Rotary District 5300 Governor Dennis Franklin, Oct. 21.
